Announcements + Photographers Log – Week 9

[dcs_img_left_ngg pos=”left” framed=”black” lightbox=”true” mright=”15″ w=”400″ h=”267″ pid=”606″]Hello Saskatoon! This week I have an exciting announcement.

Katie Deobald Photography will be doing the official event coverage for Saskatoon Blitz 2013! Pictured on the left is about half of the fantastic team of organizers who make this thing a reality every year.

Saskatoon Blitz, for those of you who are new to it, is an entertainment expo happening here in Saskatoon on June 8th and 9th, with bonus events on June 7th! The guest line up is very exciting this year, including one of my favourite voice actors, John Dimmagio! Being a huge Futurama fan, I know him best as Bender but some of you may also recognize him as Jake the Dog from Adventure time.

I will also be running a Cosplay Mini-Shoot for anyone wanting some great photos of their costume, keep an eye on this blog for more details.

Below are more of my images from this week. As you can see I am still very much in love with the lightbox I built last week.

Photographers Log – Week 8

[dcs_img_left_ngg pos=”left” framed=”black” lightbox=”true” mright=”15″ w=”267″ h=”400″ pid=”596″] Hello Saskatoon! Photographers love a new toy, and I have to say my new little desktop studio for product photography has been the highlight of this week. The darling little needle felted sculpture on the left was made by my mother as a birthday present some years ago. I imagine more images of her handmade work will appear here the next time she is in town to loan me a few more of these little darlings.

Photographers Log – Week 5

[dcs_img_left_ngg pos=”left” framed=”black” lightbox=”true” mright=”15″ w=”267″ h=”400″ pid=”559″]

Hello Saskatoon! Successful photographers are always learning new things. Another week of experiments has yielded some interesting results. This week I decided to prove how much a good photographer can do with improvised equipment. All of the macro shots I took this week used only my camera’s kit lens and the discarded magnifier from an old worklamp. What a fantastic experience! After many, many, many failed attempts I finally got a decent close-up of my eyelashes. (The light used was one of those little flexible LED’s flashlights and there was a good deal of balancing and self-timers involved in this.)

To follow up on last week’s post I also decided to include an actual photo of the choir at the start of rehearsals this week. Please click the “More” button below to see that image along with the rest of my experimients for the week.

Here’s a quick sneak peek at two of the photos from my recent coverage of Free Comic Book Day with the girls from the SLLAG, who were out in costume selling tickets for the Saskatoon Comicon at all comic shops in Saskatoon. I’d like to thank the staff and owners of 8th Street Comics, Amazing Stories, Unreal City, to all the members of the Love Love Anime Group, and to all the heroes and citizens of Saskatoon who showed up to make the event such a huge success. Stay tuned as there are many more images to come!

Recently I had the opportunity to do a shoot in the Western Development Museum in Moose Jaw. I have to say a huge thank you to all the museum staff for helping to make this shoot happen. We had four costume changes, and both the couple and their children involved in this shoot and it was just a fantastic time. More images will be following in the weeks to come, so stay tuned!

Vintage Themed Engagement – Saskatoon

[dcs_img_ngg width=”367″ height=”600″ thumb=”true” framed=”black” lightbox=”true” pos=”left” mright=”15″ pid=”259″]

Costumes, antique stores, engagements oh my! I have been very busy the past few weeks, and I am looking forward to being able to post images from my latest shoots

I love shooting engagements. You can really present a couple in a way that’s just so much more relaxed.

I feel many people are so caught up in planning the wedding, they forget to celebrate their engagement.

I find it a bit sad because it’s such a beautiful time in the relationship, it deserves to be remembered, too.

Again, big thank you again to the owner of Off Broadway Antiques. Such a lovely shop!

Artistic Portrait Session Part One

[dcs_img_ngg width=”267″ height=”300″ thumb=”true” framed=”black” lightbox=”true” pos=”left” mright=”15″ pid=”204″]

It was so very hard to choose favourites from this shoot, so I’m going to be posting the second installment next week.

I knew when I met this girl that her gorgeous complexion was the perfect complement for a few items from my personal costume collection, and she was truly up for anything that day.

The image of her spinning is my favourite from the entire shoot. It keeps all the dark elegance of the earlier images, but has this wonderfully joyous feeling to it. I must say, having wanted to add more vintage and burlesque style images to my portfolio for quite awhile, this shoot was a real treat for me to photograph.

I’m really amazed at the locations available to photographers working without a studio in Saskatoon, even in the winter. The weather was not as cold as I had expected this Sunday, so I got many more outdoor shots than I had been expecting. This shot is just a quick preview of things to come!
